WAS IST «EPOS»?
Material: brochure
Author: Beate Vogel
Language: German
Target Group: Teachers / Teacher Trainers

With the European Language Portfolio a tool has been created that promotes individual learning styles in a wider context in which importance is increasingly placed upon the development of competences, and that allows students to actively participate in the evaluation process. The language portfolio is based around the assessment levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and has a tripartite structure:
  1. Language passport (for assessment purposes)
  2. Language biography (for reflective purposes)
  3. Dossier (for both reflective and assessment purposes)

The acquisition of languages (whether in the classroom or in an extra-curricular context) and of intercultural and cross-border experiences will be accompanied, documented and evaluated from the primary school through to the upper-secondary level. The Electronic Language Portfolio “epos” builds upon this project. It takes advantage of a web-based setting and, as an alternative tool for learning, teaching, evaluation and educational policy has a huge potential for instigating reform.

With the European Language Portfolio a tool has been created that promotes individual learning styles in a wider context in which importance is increasingly placed upon the development of competences, and that allows students to actively participate in the evaluation process. Now the need has arisen for an appropriate toolset to meet the aim of democratising both the process of learning itself and the appraisal procedures that accompany it. This is the backdrop for the development of Epos, the Electronic Language Portfolio: a further development of the paper version of the European Language Portfolio which was developed by means of the project “Language learning and learning as a continuum” run by BLK (the Federal Commission for Education Planning and Research Funding). Epos is the version developed in Bremen of a web-based platform for language learning and teaching, which combines the philosophy and structure of a language portfolio with the advantages of an internet-based setting. Epos can be implemented in schools, universities, or any other context in which languages are learnt. As a tool designed for common use in a range of settings it encourages clarity regarding previously acquired linguistic and intercultural competences and experiences when transferring between educational environments, and in this way contributes to the learner’s capacity to create connections as a tool for life-long learning. This manual introduces teachers and trainers to the Epos and its aims.

QUESTIONNAIRE ON LANGUAGE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Material: Document
Author: Astrid Buschmann-Göbels
Target Group: University students
Language: German, English
read more

This document is send to all participants of the tutorial program after the first introductory meeting. They then already have some information about the use of the questionnaire and a first reflection on their language learning experience is initiated. The tutors discuss the questionnaire with the learners and get useful information for their advisory service. In the course of the program, the participants are constantly invited to reflect their learning both on the portfolio platform as well as in the meetings. By the use of some “guidelines” the learners should develop a kind of language awareness, enabling them to learn (languages) autonomously.
